Create a Campaign

Step-by-step guide to creating and configuring an email campaign in Owlat.

Create a Campaign

A campaign is a one-time or scheduled email send to a mailing list or segment. Whether you're announcing a product launch, sharing a newsletter, or running a promotion, campaigns let you reach your audience with a polished, targeted message.

Prerequisites

Before you create a campaign, make sure you have the following in place:

  • A verified sending domain connected to your Owlat organization
  • At least one contact or mailing list to send to
  • At least one email template ready to use (or plan to build one from scratch)

Step-by-Step

1. Navigate to Campaigns

Open your Owlat dashboard and go to Campaigns in the sidebar. Click the New Campaign button in the top-right corner.

2. Choose a Template

You'll be prompted to select a starting point:

  • Pick an existing template from your template library
  • Start from scratch to build a new email in the visual editor

If you choose an existing template, Owlat creates a copy so your original template stays untouched.

3. Configure Campaign Details

Fill in the key fields for your campaign:

  • Subject line -- the first thing recipients see in their inbox
  • Preview text -- the short snippet that appears after the subject line in most email clients
  • Sender name -- the "From" name your recipients will see (e.g., "Jane from Acme")
  • Reply-to address -- where replies go if a recipient hits reply

Use personalization variables like {{firstName}} in your subject line to boost open rates. A personalized subject line can increase opens by 20% or more.

4. Select Your Audience

Choose who receives this campaign:

  • Select a mailing list to send to all subscribers on that list
  • Select a segment to target a subset of contacts based on conditions you've defined

You'll see an estimated recipient count before moving forward.

5. Preview and Send a Test

Before sending to your full audience, always preview your email and send a test:

  • Use the Preview tab to see how the email renders on desktop and mobile
  • Click Send Test Email and enter your own email address to receive a real copy

Always send a test email to yourself before sending to your list. Check links, images, personalization variables, and how the email looks in your own inbox.

6. Send or Schedule

You have two options:

  • Send immediately -- your campaign starts delivering right away
  • Schedule for later -- pick a date, time, and timezone for the send

Once you confirm, Owlat queues the campaign and begins delivery.

Tips for Better Campaigns

  • A/B test your subject line -- try two variations to see which gets more opens
  • Keep your subject line under 50 characters -- shorter subjects tend to perform better on mobile
  • Use preview text intentionally -- don't let it default to the first line of your email body
  • Segment your audience -- sending relevant content to smaller, targeted groups beats blasting everyone
